Detecting and managing colorectal cancer
Colorectal cancer screening helps detect early changes in the colon or rectum, often before symptoms appear. In Singapore, screening is generally recommended from age 50 onwards as part of preventive healthcare. However, colorectal cancer is increasingly being diagnosed in younger adults. If you experience symptoms or have risk factors, it is important to speak with a doctor.

Colorectal cancer screening and treatment options

Colorectal cancer happens when small, non-cancerous polyps in the large intestine (colon) silently grow to become cancerous over a period of 5-10 years. It is a common type of cancer affecting both men and women. To date, 1 in every 20 Singaporeans are affected by colorectal cancer in their lifetime. But there is good news. With a routine medical checkup, colorectal cancer can be detected at its early stages. Making it very easy to prevent and cure. Here are some common symptoms to watch out for; persistent change in bowel habits, blood in stool, unexplained weight loss., abdominal pain or bloating, persistent tiredness. Risk factors include family history, smoking, heavy use of alcohol, obesity and individuals 50 and above. What can you do about it? Make important lifestyle changes to lower your risk of colon cancer.
Procedures available
This procedure involves viewing the colon through a camera. The camera (accompanied by a small light) is attached to a thin and flexible tube, then inserted through the anus and rectum until it reaches the colon. During colonoscopy, we can excise polyps or do a biopsy of any abnormalities in the inner lining of the colon. Watch this YouTube video for more details on what you can expect during a colonoscopy.
At HMI Medical, patients can book a health screening, arrange a consultation, or be referred for specialist evaluation if required.
