1991
Balestier Medical Centre
Balestier Medical Centre, a hospital with 62 beds was set up in Singapore by a group of local doctors, to serve the needs of local and foreign patients.
1998
Mahkota Medical Centre
During the Asian Financial Crisis, HMI invests in and obtains a management contract to run a 300 bed hospital in Malacca, Malaysia. At this stage, the hospital is nearly insolvent and HMI restructures the business model of the hospital, adapting the best practices from Singapore healthcare.
1999
HMI goes for a public listing on the Singapore Exchange, with the core business of managing Balestier Medical Centre and Mahkota Medical Centre.
1999
Mahkota sets up its first overseas representative office in Pekanbaru, Indonesia. From 500 overseas patients in its first year, the patient volume has since grown to over 100,000 patients a year.
2001
Mahkota turns around and achieves profitability.
2002
HMI Institute
HMI decides to focus on its Malaysia healthcare business and shifts core business in Singapore to healthcare training and education. HMI Institute, the Group’s social enterprise, is set up by converting the Balester Medical Centre premises into a dedicated healthcare training facility.
2008
Regency Specialist Hospital
HMI embarked on its second hospital project in Malaysia by taking over an abandoned hospital building project in Bandar Seri Alam, Johor, Malaysia. The building had been abandoned for over 10 years, and with extensive retrofitting and commissioning, the 218 bed Regency Specialist Hospital was launched.
2010
MediSave accreditation
HMI hospitals in Malaysia are awarded the accreditation for Singapore residents to use their Medisave savings in an overseas hospital.
2018
HMI re-enters Singapore healthcare with the setting up of a 30,000 sqf ambulatory care centre, StarMed Specialist Centre (now known as HMI Medical Centre) at Farrer Park. The investment was made with the mission to provide an alternative more accessible form of healthcare in Singapore, and in recognition of a global trend towards day surgeries.
To support this mission, HMI invests in setting up a chain of primary care clinics nationwide, growing it from 10 in 2019 to close to 40 in 2024.
2019
1 million patients
Regency crosses the 50 full time doctors milestone and achieves 1 million patients served to-date; making it one of the fastest growing hospitals in Malaysia.
2019
HMI Institute turns into a social enterprise. The mission is to reskill students with the required technical knowledge as well as resilience training to cope with demands of the job. In addition, HMI Institute conducts regular health talks to further build and empower communities in Singapore.
2019
Makhota Medical Centre was the first in Melaka to become Joint Commission International (JCI)-accredited, in addition to earning the 6th edition Malaysian Society for Quality in Health (MSQH) accreditation.
2019
Mahkota and Regency conduct a one-day CPR event to train the communities in Johor and Malacca, achieving a Malaysia Book of Records with over 10,000 participants.
2019
The management and selected shareholders of HMI decided to take the company private from the Singapore Exchange alongside EQT Group, a Swedish global investment fund with over EUR 224 billion of assets under management. The de-listing received the support of over 99.9% of shareholders; and was undertaken in order to accelerate the regional growth strategy of HMI.
2020
HMI Medical and its teams stepped up to help fight the Covid-19 pandemic. In Singapore, the team helped to manage more than 7,000 community care facility beds for Covid positive patients. In addition, HMI Institute trained 87,000 participants for swab training. In Malaysia, HMI hospital teams were at the front lines of the pandemic, keeping its team and patients safe while concurrently managing Covid positive patients.
2020
HMI starts the construction of a 300 bed extension to Regency, which will make it a 500 bed hospital and one of the largest in Southeast Asia.
2021
Eagle Eye Centre joins HMI Medical. Founded in 2006, Eagle Eye Centre is the largest ophthalmology group in Singapore with over 10 eye centres and 20 ophthalmologists.
2023
HMI welcomes the addition of a new capital partner, Apollo Global Management, an American firm, one of the largest alternatives asset managers globally with over USD 500 billion of assets under management. The new funds raised will go towards the further growth of HMI in the region.

MHC Asia
HMI acquires MHC Asia Group, a leading medical benefits administrator and healthcare technology platform in Singapore. With over 800,000 corporate members and 1,500 panel clinics across Singapore, MHC is a pioneer in the industry being established in 1994.

Harley Street Heart and Vascular Centre
Harley Street Cardiology and Vascular joins HMI Medical. Established in 2012, Harley Street is a leading heart and vascular group in Singapore.

Mahkota selected as one of four finalists of the Flagship Medical Tourism Hospital Programme, spearheaded by the Malaysia Healthcare Travel Council in collaboration with global medical accreditation bodies IQVIA and Joint Commission International (JCI).

Regency Specialist Hospital
Regency launches a new 35,000 sqf multi-disciplinary ambulatory care centre in Midvalley South Key, Johor, Malaysia.
