Are you experiencing an itchy scalp, burning sensation or swelling after colouring your hair?

Dermatologist Dr Kok says hair dye can cause different types of skin reactions, including irritant and allergic contact dermatitis, which can sometimes be severe.

He adds that symptoms to look out for include progressively worsening rashes, facial or eyelid swelling, severe itching and burning, and blisters on the scalp, neck and face. An allergic reaction may also develop only after repeated exposure to hair dye.

In the article, he also mentions that people with existing scalp rashes or broken skin should avoid hair colouring, while those who frequently handle hair dye, such as hairdressers and salon staff, may be at higher risk of reactions.

In rare cases, a severe hair dye allergy can cause anaphylaxis and affect breathing or swallowing, requiring immediate medical attention.
