Part of our “In Practice” series: perspectives from specialists advancing patient-centred care
Hip replacement surgery has evolved significantly over the past decade, supported by advances in surgical techniques, implant design, imaging, anaesthesia, and recovery protocols. These developments have made it possible for suitable patients to undergo selected procedures in accredited day surgery settings, where recovery is guided through structured pathways and multidisciplinary coordination.
Professor Chia Shi-Lu, Senior Orthopaedic Surgeon at Activ Orthopaedic Centre, focuses on hip and knee replacement, joint preservation and cartilage repair. With decades of clinical experience, Professor Chia places strong emphasis on preparation, precision and teamwork throughout each stage of care.
He performs joint replacement procedures at HMI Medical Centre, guided by the Enhanced Recovery After Surgery (ERAS) protocol to maintain consistent standards from pre-operative assessment through post-operative follow-up which reduces surgical stress, maintain physiological function and accelerate recovery.
“Hip surgery today is about precision in every phase,” says Professor Chia. “That includes planning the operation, optimizing the patient’s condition and coordinating care so that recovery is well-managed and reassuring.”

Each procedure is planned carefully, beginning with imaging, mobility assessment and pre-operative preparation to determine suitability for day surgery. During the operation, anesthesia and surgical teams work closely to support comfort and promote early mobilization. Patients are provided with clear instructions for post-operative recovery and follow-up with their Specialist.
This coordinated approach offers a structured and transparent care experience, supported by communication and alignment among clinical teams. According to Professor Chia, the growing adoption of enhanced recovery protocols represents a positive direction for Orthopaedic care in Singapore, combining planning, precision and collaboration to help patients regain movement and confidence safely.
