Beyond mammograms: What every woman in Singapore should know about screening options

Between work, family, and everything in between, it’s easy for health checks to slip down the priority list. For many women in Singapore, breast screening often becomes something we plan to do “someday” but never quite get around to.

You may feel perfectly fine, but screenings aren’t about how you feel today, they’re about staying one step ahead. Detecting small changes early makes them easier to manage, so you can continue living well and feeling confident about your health.

    Why early detection matters

Breast cancer is the most common cancer among women in Singapore. The encouraging news is that when detected early, treatment is often more effective, and recovery outcomes are much better.

Screening isn’t about fear, it’s about confidence. It gives you information, reassurance, and the ability to take charge of your wellbeing.

The best time to go for a check is when you feel well, not when symptoms appear.

    Understanding your screening options

Women today have more options than ever when it comes to breast health.

    1. Basic Breast Cancer Screening

The foundation of regular breast care: Mammogram, or Breast Ultrasound

A mammogram is a quick, low-dose X-ray that helps detect early changes in breast tissue. A breast ultrasound, which uses sound waves, is often recommended for younger women or those with dense breast tissue.

Both are simple, accessible tests available at most health screening centres with imaging facilities, and remain the cornerstone of early detection. Eligible Singaporean women aged 50 and above can also benefit from subsidised mammograms under the national Screen for Life programme, available at participating clinics and polyclinics across the country.

    2. Comprehensive Breast Health Screening

This option combines breast imaging (mammogram or ultrasound) with a specialised blood test that analyses protein biomarkers linked to breast tissue changes.

It is generally recommended for women who have dense breast tissue, inconclusive imaging results, or a strong family history of breast cancer, and for those who want a more comprehensive understanding of their breast health.

Used together, these tests provide a broader view of breast health and support more informed discussions with your doctor about ongoing care and next steps.

    3. Multi-Cancer Early Detection (MCED)

For those who wish to look beyond breast health, multi-cancer early detection (MCED) tests offer a broader view of overall wellbeing through a simple blood test. These tests detect cancer-related signals in the blood and can identify markers associated with more than 10 to 20 types of cancer, including breast, lung, liver, and colorectal.

They are designed for individuals who want to take a more proactive and preventive approach to their health, complementing routine breast cancer screenings and doctor consultations.

Making it part of everyday self-care

In Singapore’s fast-paced lifestyle, self-care often means taking time to rest, eat well, or exercise. Breast screening deserves a place in that routine too. A simple check takes less than 30 minutes but can offer months — even years — of peace of mind.

So take this as your reminder to schedule that screening, encourage a friend, or talk to your family about it. Early detection begins with awareness, and one reminder can make all the difference.
