Introduction
Dr Gerald Tan is a Specialist Urologist and accredited Robotic Surgeon at Mount Elizabeth Hospital (Orchard & Novena campuses) with a keen interest in minimally invasive urologic surgery and urologic cancer therapies. Dr Tan graduated from the University of Edinburgh, UK in 1996, and completed his specialist training in urology in 2007 at both Tan Tock Seng Hospital (TTSH) and Singapore General Hospital.
Dr Tan then completed a 2-year fellowship in both prostate cancer research and robotic urologic oncology under world-renowned robotic surgeon Professor Ash Tewari, Director of both the Prostate Cancer Institute and LeFrak Institute of Robotic Surgery at Weill Medical College of Cornell University, New York City. With Professor Tewari and his co-investigators at Cornell, Dr Tan also explored the potential of novel laser technologies to better visualize the tissues around the prostate that contain the delicate microscopic nerves responsible for erection. Their groundbreaking research has been recognized with top awards and honors from the American Urological Association, the Society of Laparoendoscopic Surgeons, the Sexual Medicine Society of North America, and the International College of Surgeons.
Dr Tan has received numerous top international academic awards and honors, being the named recipient of the prestigious Ferdinand C. Valentine Fellowship in Urologic Research by the New York Academy of Medicine, the AACR-GlaxoSmithKline Outstanding Clinical Scholar Award by the American Association of Cancer Research, the John Steyn Travelling Fellowship in Urology & the James Syme Medal for outstanding academic achievement by the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh. In 2009, he received the Outstanding Young Persons of Singapore Award (Medical Innovation) by Junior Chamber International (Singapore). In 2011, Dr Tan was awarded the Yahya Cohen Memorial Lecture and Medal from the College of Surgeons of Singapore in recognition of excellence in clinical research.
Dr Tan has been involved in over 1,300 robotic radical prostatectomies, and pioneered robotic kidney-sparing surgery (partial nephrectomy) for kidney cancer and robotic radical cystectomy for muscle-invasive bladder cancer in TTSH. At TTSH, he headed the hospital’s Robotic Urology Task Force as Surgical Proctor, and oversaw the development of the hospital’s inpatient carepath for patients undergoing robotic prostatectomy. Dr Tan is proficient in robotic and advanced laparoscopic procedures. Previously a Visiting Consultant in the Department of Gynaecologic Oncology, KK Women’s and Children’s Hospital, Dr Tan also performs major cancer and reconstructive surgeries for complex pelvic cancers. In 2012, he was named the Outstanding Young Urologist of Asia by the Urological Association of Asia for his significant academic and clinical contributions to the field of urology in Asia.
Dr Tan is a regular reviewer for the British Journal of Urology International in the fields of minimally invasive and robotic surgery. He has served as Course Director in numerous symposia and masterclasses in robotic and minimally invasive urologic surgery, and shares his expertise extensively as invited speaker and faculty in workshops and conferences in the United States, United Kingdom, Hong Kong, Shanghai, Japan, Malaysia, Cambodia and Thailand.
