Introduction
Dr Michael Ross MacDonald is a highly experienced Senior Consultant Cardiologist dedicated to the comprehensive management of all heart conditions. From investigating chest pain and palpitations to managing complex heart failure and arrhythmias, Dr MacDonald’s primary goal is to help his patients achieve their best level of health and vitality. He is a staunch proponent of preventative cardiology, believing that the most successful clinical outcomes are those where disease is identified and halted before it can progress.
Outside the clinic, Dr MacDonald is an avid sportsman. When he isn’t seeing patients, he keeps active through cycling, skiing, working out and practising his golf swing. This personal commitment to physical fitness reflects his belief in the important role that lifestyle plays in long-term heart health.
While Dr MacDonald manages the full spectrum of general cardiology, he brings a unique perspective as a certified physician in obesity medicine. He views heart health through a holistic lens, integrating medical excellence with lifestyle and weight management.
In the right patients, he can focus on coronary plaque reversal, utilising evidence-based protocols not only to manage symptoms but to actively improve arterial health and long-term quality of life. As he explains, “I am passionate about movement and healthy living. My motivation as a cardiologist is to empower my patients to achieve a level of fitness that allows them to truly enjoy their lives again, moving beyond disease management towards the potential for reversal.”
Beyond his work in general cardiology, Dr MacDonald has an interest in genetic heart conditions. He provides specialised care for patients navigating complex heritable disorders, including familial hyperlipidaemia and cardiomyopathies. By combining advanced genetic insight with precise clinical management, he ensures that patients with inherited risks receive the most forward-thinking care available.
Originally from Scotland, Dr MacDonald graduated from Aberdeen University and completed his cardiology training in the renowned Scottish Golden Jubilee Hospital training programme. He spent three years at the Scottish National Advanced Heart Failure and Transplant Unit, where he was mentored by the “founding fathers” of modern heart failure therapy, Professor Henry Dargie and Professor John McMurray.
Before moving to Singapore in 2015, he held a prestigious fellowship in Cardiovascular MRI at the Royal Brompton Hospital in London, attaining the highest level of accreditation in cardiac MRI. In Singapore, he was head-hunted by Changi General Hospital (CGH) to develop their Heart Failure and Imaging services, helping them achieve the coveted JCI accreditation.
Dr MacDonald is a recognised global authority on the relationship between diabetes and heart disease, the subject of his Research Doctorate (MD) awarded in 2011. He has published extensively in top-tier journals, including Circulation, and serves as a reviewer for The Lancet. He was awarded Adjunct Associate Professor at Duke-NUS Graduate Medical School and remains at the forefront of medical education and clinical research.
