Introduction

Dr Chia is a Specialist in Orthopaedic Surgery. He studied Medicine at the National University of Singapore under the President's Scholarship, graduating in 1995 on the Dean's List. He obtained his Fellowship of the Royal College of Surgeons (Edinburgh) for General Surgery in 2000, and received his FRCS for Orthopaedics & Traumatology in 2003.

He then completed research and clinical fellowships focusing on lower limb and cartilage restoration surgery at leading centres in Japan, the UK and the USA. Following his arthroplasty fellowship at Brigham & Women's Hospital and Harvard Medical School, in Boston, USA, he returned to Singapore in 2007 to rejoin the Adult Reconstruction Service of the Orthopaedic Department at Singapore General Hospital, where he continues to be a Visiting Consultant.

Aside from General Orthopaedic and Trauma Surgery, Dr Chia's specialty expertise are in hip and knee reconstructive arthroplasty, joint preserving and minimally-invasive joint surgery, and cartilage repair. He has published widely and has authored several book chapters, and has given numerous talks and conducted many courses both regionally and internationally. His teaching commitments extend to Duke-NUS Medical School, Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine and Nanyang Technological University. He is a member of the Academic Advisory Board of the Management Development Institute of Singapore, and also the Curriculum Advisory Board of the Bioengineering Program of UniSIM.

He is passionate about community and social work, and has contributed widely in these areas. Dr Chia was a Member of Parliament for Tanjong Pagar GRC from 2011-2020, and served as the Chairman of the General Parliamentary Committee for Health from 2013-2020. He continues to be active in charitable and non-profit healthcare initiatives.

Dr Chia is keenly interested in sports. He was a past Advisor to the Tanjong Pagar Football Club, and has been the President of the Singapore Dragon Boat Association until 2013, previously serving as its Vice President.
