Introduction
Adjunct Assistant Professor Cheryl Lau specializes in colorectal surgery, laparoscopic surgery and endoscopy. She has extensive experience in minimally invasive colorectal and general surgical procedures including hernias, gallbladders, advanced endoscopies, treatment of colorectal cancers and benign colorectal diseases, perianal disorders and bowel disorders.
Dr Cheryl graduated from the medical school at National University of Singapore in 2003. She successfully completed her advanced surgical training in both National University Hospital and Tan Tock Seng Hospital. She obtained her surgery fellowship diplomas from the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh in 2012 and was conferred Master of Medicine in Surgery in the same year as well.
Dr Cheryl was awarded the Ministry of Health Human Manpower Development Program in 2011. Under the mentorship of Prof Philip Fleshner and his team of nine senior colorectal surgeons, she completed a year of surgical fellowship training in advanced colon and rectal surgery training at the world-renowned Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in the United States. During her fellowship, she became especially well versed in every aspect of the management of colorectal diseases and proctology.
As one of the pioneering surgeons for Jurong Health campus (NUHS, National University Health Services), Dr Cheryl was a founding member of the Colorectal Surgery division and the Surgical Trauma Lead Surgeon in Ng Teng Fong General Hospital. She was actively involved in hospital planning and chaired the General Surgery department for peer review learning, morbidity and mortality clinical audit and governance committees among other roles.
She was appointed by NUHS as the Trauma Surgery lead and Chief Surgeon for Ng Teng Fong General Hospital in 2018.
Passionate in teaching the next generation of surgeons, Dr Cheryl was the Residency Program Director for Surgery-in-general Residents and the Research Director lead. She is a Clinical Lecturer with Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine, National University of Singapore. She was also a teacher for the national FRCS Viva course for training surgeons. She received the Dean’s Award for Excellence in undergraduate teaching and Best Teacher (Surgery) Awards. During her public hospital tenure, she was awarded several hospital research grants for clinical quality research. She has authored numerous research articles and book chapters, including publications in the prestigious Annals of Surgery Journal and is an invited reviewer for many international journals.
Placing patient-centered care as her mission, Dr Cheryl has received yearly awards for her clinical care, including Service Ambassador awards and Service Quality Champions. She practices holistic patient care and places strong belief in working with her patients for best health outcomes.
